A two-hour drive from the big smoke of Sydney, the Hunter Valley is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions. Situated on Melbourne’s doorstep, the Yarra Valley is well known for its production of cooler-climate grapes – think sparkling Chardonnay, aromatic Pinot Noir, savoury Cabernet Sauvignon and spicy Shiraz. The region is also known for its fantastic restaurants and architecturally stunning wineries, while the Valley’s winemakers are heralded for their revolutionary and respectful production practices.
While Australia’s south-eastern is often regarded as the hot spot for wine production, this truly stunning region is well worth the trek across the Nullarbor. Stretching along 100km of the Western Australian coastline, Margaret River is famous for fresh Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blends, intense Chardonnay, rich and spicy Shiraz and perhaps the finest Cabernet Sauvignon outside of France’s Burgundy region. As one of Australia’s youngest wine regions, Margaret River makes up for its lack of age with picturesque landscapes and a reputation as one of the country’s foremost producers of premium wine.
